Workshops on the New Curriculum, Session 1: First-Year Writing and First-Year Data & Society

Facilitators: Melissa Forbes (English, First-Year Writing Coordinator) and Meg Blume-Kohout (Economics, First-Year Data & Society Coordinator)

Melissa and Meg will present learning outcomes, examples, and other resources for faculty currently teaching or interested in developing courses for these requirements. Special focus will be placed on differences between old and new FYW outcomes, and opportunities for interdisciplinarity and innovation within the new FYDS requirement. The session will feature an extended question-and-answer period.

Workshops on the New Curriculum, Session 2: The Gettysburg Seminars Program (FYS and SYS) and the Perspectives & Social Change Requirements

Facilitators: Bill O’Hara (Music, Director of the Gettysburg Seminars & Skills Program), Jenny Dumont (Spanish, Sophomore-Year Seminar coordinator), Alecea Standlee (Sociology), and Nick Miller (Art History and Curriculum Review Committee)

Bill and Jenny will offer an overview of the First-Year Seminar program, and a preview of the new Sophomore-year “Communities and Change” seminar requirement. Then, Alecea and Nick will discuss the “Perspectives and Social Change” requirements of the new curriculum (“Identities & Cultures” and “Race, Power, & Equity”). They will discuss learning outcomes and example courses, and provide resources. This session will also feature an extended discussion period about the new requirements.
